Büttner's works with different techniques video and performance, woodcuts, inverted glass painting and silkscreens. In her work we can find connections between the history of art and social problems, emphasizing the issues of poverty, vulnerability and the belief systems that support them. She lived for some time in Italy, where she lived in religious orders. Her interest in religious communities arose from this time. Hence, in her works she shows the point of union between the world of art and religious communities. This being a very frequent theme in Büttner´s work.
