Lives and works in Seattle.
As a child he lives in Redondo Beach where he practiced surfing and skateboarding. He was a skateboarding champion in 1964. At the end of the sixties, he met the artist Anthony Park, who encourages him to dedicate himself to sculpture and welding. Later he trained with the painter Bruce Dorfman in New York. Throughout his artistic career he has used different media, mainly sculpture, installation, video, sound and performance. Themes such as synesthesia and the ontological appear in his works, that makes the viewer interact.
His work has been exhibited around the world, including solo shows at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Fondation Cartier pour l´art contemporain, Paris; the MACBA, Barcelona; The Center Georges Pompidou, Paris; among others. He has also received numerous awards: the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Award (1988), the Kurt-Schwitters Award (2000), honorary doctorates from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland (2005), and the College of Arts in Cornish, Seattle, WA (2011).
