Koancuts, 1971

Author: Liliane Lijn

Collage and serigraph printing.

Lijn lived in London during the swinging sixties with its multicoloured fun and its new and shiny, colourful plastic. The Koans originated in the striped English traffic cones, though the name “Koan” is also inspired by Zen. Sometimes their shapes bow down like Japanese monks and the same wordplay resulting from the pronunciation of koan and cone is a reference to the “question without an answer”.
