Lives and works between Suffolk and London.
He has a degree in interactive art from Manchester Metropolitan University. He has studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. His works range from painting, installation, sculpture to writing. He has a physical disability that requires him to use a wheelchair. This condition has made him explore the personal challenges that he has to face every day and that he later shows in his works. One of the works that most reveals these challenges is: “Is the guilt in you too? (Cinema Verso, 2006), is an installation that presents a room full of obstacles arranged in a labyrinthine fashion, with which he wants to show the difficulty that people with reduced mobility encounter every day.
He is a great lover of the symbolism of Japanese culture. In 2017 the BBC produced the documentary Ryan Gander: The idea of Japan, this documentary follows Gander as he visits the country.
His works can be seen in important collections such as: the Tate Gallery in London, the Moderner Kunst Museum in Vienna, the Contemporary Museum in Chicago, among others.
