Susan Hiller was one of the most influential artists of her generation. She was born in the United States and lived in London until her death in 2019. She studied film and photography in New York at The Cooper Union and archeology and linguistics at Hunter College. Since the 1960s she lived mainly in London. In her beginnings she worked with painting and from the 80s she began to make use of audio and video technology. She created installations, multiscreen videos, and audio. Her creations have been internationally recognized and influenced young British artists.
In her works she uses basic materials based on cultural gadgets typical of our society. In many of her works she explores the preamble to some phenomena: near-death experiences, collective experiences of the unconscious and subconscious, paranormal activities, etc.
We can see her works in important international public and private collections such as: the Institute of Contemporary Art in London (1986) and Tate Liverpool (1996) or at the Tate in London.
