Endless Night Series, 1978-1980

Gelatin silver print.

This attempts to explore the city through signs and memory. In 2001, just after her mother’s death, Ishiuchi turned her attention to a work she had done 20 years before. As she explains in the epilogue, she printed these negatives that had never before been printed. The essence of these negatives takes shape on printing paper with a clearness as if they had been taken yesterday. In the dark room, time tilts slightly, and as the images appear the artist becomes "a traveller suspended in the town of endless night".
