Lives and works in Stockholm.
Bäckström first studied art history at Stockholm University and then photography at the Stockholm Academy of Photography in the 1990s, where she became known as a conceptual photographer.
In her works we can see various types of media: photography, theater, installation, performance, cinema and written text. In her first photography works we find interior spaces such as museum galleries, shop windows or apartments, in which the human figure does not appear, but we can feel its presence, as if they were theatrical spaces. More recently her work leans more towards the theater with dramatic pieces, video and performances in which she tries to achieve the narration of the story and the exhibition of art.
Her works have been exhibited at: the Center Culturel Suédois, Paris (France); the Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel (Switzerland); Nationalmuseum (Stockholm), Museum of Contemporary Art, Budapest (Hungary), at the Extra-City Kunsthal, Belgium or the Sven-Harry Artmuseum in Stockholm, at the Färgfabriken (Stockholm) among others.
