Hasselt, Belgium, 1979.
Between 1999 and 2003 he earned a master’s degree in fine arts and photography from the University College of Limburg in Ghent and from 2003 to 2005 he completed a post-graduate programme in international transmedia from Saint-Lukas University College of Art and Design in Brussels.
Pieter Geenen is interested in the suggestive and evocative qualities of the landscape in relation to personal and collective memory and to personal and collective identity. He strives to translate the complexity of a particular geo-political and geo-social reality into a reflection on the concepts of borders (home), land, migration and nationalism.
Geenen implicates a constant, repetitive and static world in his abstraction. He explores the relationship between vision and sound and the imprecise boundaries between the visible and the audible. He tends to operate on a fine line between movement and static images.
