João Maria Gusmão, Lisbon, Portugal, 1979.
Pedro Paiva, Lisbon, Portugal, 1977.
João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva started working together in 2011, not only as artists, but as publishers (Jornal Efluvio Magnético e Abissologia, livro 1 e 2). In their early days working together they focused their attention on events related to the mechanisms of perception and the unconscious.
As has become customary over the course of their trajectory, each Gusmão + Paiva exhibition offers a wide range of works using different media but where film, photography and the object predominate. Each of their works preserves its own autonomy or uniqueness and is related to the exhibition space as a variation on one big story.
Their work is exhibited at Kunsthaus Glarus, at Kunsternernes Hus in Oslo, at the Marino Marini Museum in Florence, at the Kunsthalle in Dusseldorf, at IMO Projects in Copenhagen, at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco, at the Matadero in Madrid (PHotoEspaña 08) and HangarBicocca (2014).
Gusmão + Paiva have participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the 53rd and 55th Venice Biennale.
Live and work in Lisbon, Portugal.
